Cotoneaster, fam. Rosaceae.
Despite similar Russian and Ukrainian names, it has nothing common with dogwood. Rather, it is closer to hawthorn. Occurs both in the city and in the forest (the latter plants are probably not indigenous inhabitants there). The shrubs bloom in May, not very conspicuously. The fruits are possibly edible (it depends on the species of Cotoneaster, which is difficult to distinguish), but they have relatively poor taste quality. These fruits remain on the shrubs until the frosts. They have diuretic, choleretic and astringent properties.
