Dogwood (Cornus), fam. Cornaceae.
The most early flowering among the fruit plants (not counting the hazelnut). Grows in the yards of private houses, and around them. Bright flowers are deprived of odor. The fruits ripen in September, and have high nutritional value. The flesh of dogwood fruits contains sugars, organic acids, tannins, pectins and nitrogenous substances, flavonoids, vitamins (C, PP), essential oil, phytoncides, microelements (iron, calcium). Dogwood is used for gastrointestinal diseases, gastritis, bowel disorders (due to astringent, antidiarrhoeal action). Dogwood berries are useful for metabolic disorders, gout, skin diseases; they speed up detoxication.
But don't believe if the dried fruit sellers in Kyiv offer you red fruits called "Kizil" ("Dogwood") – most probably, these are …candied tomatoes!
