Cranesbill (Geranium), fam. Geraniaceae: in the vicinity of DVRZ suburb there are at least four species.
Bloody Cranesbill (Geranium sanguineum).
A very showy forest flower. Grows in both humid and dry places, but always prefers them to be sunny. Among all our cranesbill species, this one has the most impressive blooming, and it is also quite long, from the middle of May almost until the end of summer. Owing to this, the wild species became a base for cultivated hybrids. However, it should be noted that the indoor pelargoniums, commonly also called geraniums or storksbills, are not very close relatives of this species.
Bloody Cranesbill is quite widely used in medicine. It contains a lot of tannins, has astringent, antiinflammatory, sedative, antihypertensive properties, and considered to be capable of dissolving the "salt deposits" in the body.
Other Geranium species – Small-flowered Cranesbill, Herb-Robert, Siberian Cranesbill.
