Bur-reed (Sparganium), fam. Sparganiaceae or Typhaceae.
A perennial water and swamp herbaceous plant. The species growing in Kyiv is probably Simplestem (Branched) Bur-reed (Sparganium erectum) or Small-fruit Bur-reed (S. microcarpum). It has been found in the same place as Water-plantain – i.e. in Darnitsya river near Popudrenka street. These plants bloom also simultaneously, in June. Among the plants present in Kyiv, the closest relative to Bur-reed is Cattail – the shape of their leaves makes them easy to confuse, when the flowers or fruits are not available.
The Bur-reed inflorescences are separated into male and female. The fruits are buoyant and sprout if the current brings them to the shore.
Sometimes Bur-reed is used as an original ornamental plant. However, instead of large and mighty Sparganium erectum other smaller species should be chosen, and even they are suitable for relatively large reservoirs only. The roots can pierce and ruin the film bottom of the pool.
Bur-reed is rarely used in medicine – as analgetic and sedative remedy, to normalize digestion, against liver tumors, and to lower blood pressure.
