Tufted Hairgrass, Tussock Grass (Deschampsia cespitosa), fam. Poaceae.
Even an experienced person often has difficulties in identifying the grass species. They are all herbaceous plants with long narrow leaves, and spike or panicle inflorescences. Then it is possible to realize gradually that some species have specialities in their exterior. For example, Tufted Hairgrass is notable in early spring by its dense and elegant tussocks with very narrow leaves (2 mm width).
Fodder qualities of Tufted Hairgrass are mediocre – it is edible for cattle in early spring only. There are commercial medicines with immunostimulating and antiviral activity, based on Tufted Hairgrass extract.
