Canna, fam. Cannaceae.
It is rarely grown in DVRZ suburb in Kyiv. Canna grows and blooms abundantly in sunny, protected from the wind places, with soft and fertile soil. As a plant of tropical origin, canna cannot bear any frost, and needs its rhizomes to be stored in winter at positive temperature, from +5 to +15°C. Among its well-known relatives in the plant world are ginger and banana. In tropical countries, starchy canna rhizomes are used as food, and its leaves as cattle fodder; besides, canna has antidepressant values. However, it is unknown how much these applications can be valid for the species grown in Ukraine.
