Lungwort (Pulmonaria), fam. Boraginaceae.
Grows in the forest, in shady, humid, even waterlogged in spring, places. Blooms from April to early May. The flowers change their color from red to blue during several days of their life. So, owing to unsimultaneity of their development, each plant usually has flowers of both colors at one time. Flower-bearing stems with small leaves are later replaced by vegetative with large wide leaves. Depending on the species, round white, grey or pinkish spots, scattered over the leaf surface, can be more or less notable. These spots may make the plant even more ornamental, so it is grown sometimes in the gardens beds of the city.
Young leaves are edible (in some countries this is a common salad vegetable), but their taste is not pronounced. As the leaves accumulate a lot of dust on their nappy surface, which is difficult to wash away, it is recommended to consume them only cooked.
