Pot (English) Marigold (Calendula officinalis), fam. Asteraceae.
It is grown in city flower beds, but unfortunately not very often. Nevertheless, this plant is quite sturdy, and may bloom with equal success as in the peak of summer (well, except the really hard droughts), as during the winter thaws. It only does not like complete shadow. In Southern Ukraine, blooming pot marigolds have often been noticed in January-February, provided that there was no snow.
The main medicinal action of calendula is antiseptic and wound-healing. Besides, it also has astringent, sedative, diuretic, tonic and hypotensive properties. Young leaves and flowers are even used in cooking, adding bright color and flavor to the dishes.
