Barberry (Berberis)

   Barberry (Berberis), fam. Berberidaceae.
Sometimes found in the city, and fragmentarily - in the forest, somewhat concentrating on the way to the lakes before Rybne village. Picturesque flowers (though with not so pleasant, stale odor) appear in May. The fruits ripen completely by the end of autumn, drawing attention among the gloomy landscape. It is not easy to find places with crop ample for any use (like in photo 1-3); much more often, there are shrubs with a couple dozen berries only, and even those are mostly dry.
The fruits of barberry contain 6–7% sugars, 2.6–6.6% acids, 0.6% pectin, 0.172% vitamin C, alkaloids, particularly berberin (capable of stimulating action to the muscles of uterus, to enhance bile excretion, to increase the amplitude of heart contractions; has antibacterial and antifungal properties).
