Bird Cherry (Padus), fam. Rosaceae.
There are two species - European Bird Cherry and Black Cherry (Chokecherry).
2. Black Cherry (Padus serotina) or Chokecherry (Padus virginiana).
Grows only in the forest, but in great quantities. Blooms in May, 2-3 weeks after the European Bird Cherry. In the end of August, an abundant crop of fruit ripens. They are edible (sweet, slightly astringent), but somewhat inconvenient to use due to large stony seeds. Bright color of the fruit indicates significant content of beneficial substances (antocyanins, vitamins, flavonoids) in it. The fruit helps against bowel infections and diarrhea.
