Woodruff (Asperula), fam. Rubiaceae.
Grows in the forest, in shady places. Forms gritty vines, sticking to clothes. It is distinguished by whorled leaf arrangement. Woodruff is slightly toxic; in small quantities it may be used as a spice, but there is no definite sense to do so.It is used as a sedative and hypnotic, diuretic, sudorific remedy, and also for jaundice. As well as other herbs rich in coumarin, woodruff should be used limitedly.
