Quite abundant city flowers, which bloom from July until autumn frosts if planted directly from the seeds. Their smell is a little pungent, and they may be used as a spice.
After the known song, someone may consider marigold as one of "Ukrainian national" flowers. This is not completely true: the plant originates from Central America, and it is equally widespread and appreciated by all landscapers around the world. In temperate latitudes their season is only one summer, but in tropics marigolds can bloom all the year round.
Modern research proves the healing properties of marigold: the flowers contain carotenoids, particularly lutein. These substances decrease the risk of cataract development. The flowers are most commonly used as medicine. The preparations from this plant have anthelmintic, sudorific, bactericidal, diuretic, antiinflammatory action. For example, a recipe for good metabolism and healthy liver: put 5 marigold flowers into 1 litre of boiling water, and boil gently for 3 more minutes. Strain and drink 250 ml before your morning and evening meals. The treatment course is 1 month, then make a 1-week break and repeat the course. The concoction and tincure of marigold can be to control pests of garden or indoor plants.
