Sweetclover (Melilotus), fam. Fabaceae.
There are two species along some of the city roads – White Sweetclover (Melilotus alba), with white flowers, and Yellow Sweetclover (Melilotus officinalis).
Analogous to white sweetclover, this species is a marvellous honey and fodder plant. Apparently, it contains less toxic or very potent components, so its medicinal applications are wider (which is reflected in its species name). There are even recipes for using its young shoots and inflorescences in teas or salads in small quantities, without specific medical indications, but simply for its pleasant aroma.
In scientific medicine, the tops of the plants with flowers and leaves are used. Sweetclover is recommended as anticonvulsive and cardiovascular remedy; for rheumatism, neurasthenia, migraine, in menopausal period; to mitigate radiation syndrome.
If dried improperly in wet weather, even with small amounts of mold appearing – the antocoagulant dicoumarine levels in sweetclover rise dramatically, so the medicine turns into poison, which dangerously reduces blood clotting.
